JR Pass or Single Tickets? Doing the Sums

The JR Pass used to be the first thing everyone bought. Since its price went up it often costs more than the tickets it replaces, so add up your rides before you buy one.

In short

  • A 7-day JR Pass costs ¥50,000 on the official site.
  • Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Tokyo on single Nozomi tickets costs ¥45,270.
  • With the pass, every Nozomi or Mizuho ride needs an extra ticket: ¥4,960 from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka.
  • With smartEX you board with a QR code or your IC card, and can change trains for free until departure, as long as you haven’t gone through the gates.

Does the JR Pass still pay off?

¥50,000 — A 7-day pass, ordinary cars, bought on the official site. Through an agency abroad: ¥53,000.

Take the classic first trip: Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and back. These are smartEX’s regular-season prices for a reserved seat on the Nozomi.

  • Tokyo → Kyoto: ¥13,970
  • Kyoto → Hiroshima: ¥11,740
  • Hiroshima → Tokyo: ¥19,560

¥45,270 — The whole loop on single tickets, and on the faster train

Common mistake: Buying the pass because it used to be the bargain. Add up your rides for the 7, 14 or 21 days first.

Nozomi, Mizuho and the pass

The pass covers the Hikari and Kodama on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines. The faster Nozomi and Mizuho need a special ticket on top, bought for each ride.

¥4,960 — The Nozomi ticket for pass holders, Tokyo to Shin-Osaka

It’s sold in Japan from a month before the day you ride, and the pass must be valid on that day. A reserved seat with it is booked in person, not online.

Single tickets on your phone: smartEX

smartEX sells tickets for the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu shinkansen online. You board with a QR code or by tapping your IC card at the gate.

  • Booking opens a year ahead; seats are confirmed a month before the day.
  • Change the train as often as you like, free, until it leaves, as long as you haven’t gone through the gates.
  • Prices move with the season, by ¥200 to ¥800: lower off-peak, higher in peak weeks.

When a pass is worth it

A pass wins when your rides in its 7, 14 or 21 days come to more than its price. That means several long trips, not one loop.

  • Many long rides in a week: Tokyo to Kyushu and back, with side trips.
  • JR trains beyond the Tokaido line on the same trip, which the pass covers too.
  • Staying in one region? JR companies sell regional passes; check them against single tickets the same way.

Tip: The planner shows each ride of your route. Add up the shinkansen legs that fall within 7 days and compare the sum with ¥50,000.
